Free show at Whammy Bar on Friday 30 July

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 by Ashley Noel Hinton

It’s a birthday, and the birthday girl wants you to come see Canadia, Death Valley, and The Vietnam War at Whammy Bar in Auckland. It doesn’t cost a thing to get in, which means you can party easy knowing that your money can go right across the bar and help those pale Whammy bar-people.

You can start feeding the starving bar staff from 9pm on Friday 30th July. Don’t forget to RSVP on Facebook so you can get their hopes up. This is also useful if you need to prove to someone that you really have something to do that night.

Gig with Mr Slackjaw and Bride of Pinbot at the Wine Cellar

Canadia, Mr Slackjaw and Bride of Pinbot poster

Last November we threw a little show at the Wine Cellar, which was actually our first show as a band. It was the release party for Beg Steal and Burrow, and our good friend Mr Slackjaw was going to join us in support. Things didn’t work out and Mr Slackjaw couldn’t play, but we never forgot that it was a great idea.

My point is: we’ve finally knitted our schedules together to put on a show on Saturday June 5. From the Facebook event page:

Promises were made, when Canadia and Mr Slackjaw were younger, promises of fidelity and rockingness. But life, o life! as it so often does had other plans for this lad and lass.

Spun out on some separate trip, they’re only just now getting pinned down at the party pit that is the Wine Cellar. Bride of Pinbot will serve as celebrant, and you’re all bridesmaids.

Excuse me while I walk around and drink some more.

You may know Bride of Pinbot from these awesome teaser videos, or you may just know Bride of Pinbot. I ain’t no scientist. I’m a dancer. I will see you on the science floor. Dance floor. Whatever.

Yule & Canadia, Whammy Bar poster

Yule’s coming out of some kind of hiatus with a new band line-up next Thursday 6 May, and Canadia is there, also. Come check the music action from 11pm at Whammy Bar for radness and radulence.

Make it official and RSVP on the Facebook event.

Rocking the Whammy Bar with Voices on the Sun and Cool Rainbows

Monday, January 25th, 2010 by Ashley Noel Hinton

We have smiling faces, and we will be selling them to you at Whammy Bar on Thursday 4th February from 4pm. Come join us, Voices on the Sun and Cool Rainbows for a party-time gigsplosion.

Raised by were-rabbits, Canadia, Voices and the Sun and Cool Rainbows are as deadly as they are not dead. They’ve been shunning the sun and bathing in the sound of art critics complaining about the demise of culture to prepare for this night.

Lazerbeasts unite, it’s going to be a sweat night.

Doors at 10, the music asplodes at your face from 11pm. Bring $5 because that will get you in the door. Only your wits will get you out.

Temple of the Dudes

Julian Temple Band

Tomorrow night Canadia is hitting the Juice Bar in Parnell to support the crap out of Dunedin dudes Julian Temple Band. A few of us have known these cats since they were the JuJu crew, and perhaps even before. They’re from Dunedin, which is where some of us used to be from. Sharing and caring around the country!

So you should be at the Juice Bar by about 9pm to catch Canadia’s first Parnell gig. Will we be run out of the suburb? I just don’t know! Juice Bar is in the Windsor Castle at 144 Parnell Road, Parnell. I think I might get there early and have a picnic dinner down in Fraser Park. Please do not stalk me in a scary way!

Release party poster

Last night I went on my first poster mission in what must be about two years, rocking up and down K Road with Caitrin and Ryan from Stirrers sticking up Canadia EP release party posters, and flyers for the free Stirrers gig tonight at Whammy. If you see one of these bad boys on your travels give it a high five, will ya?

The InvertsI’ve been ticking away on the mixing of Beg Steal and Burrow quite steadily, shunning the outside world and chewing holes in my cheeks as I try to mix without smoking. I know there’s never a good time to quit, but come on.

I will make it, that I promise. Careful observers will not that another show has been slipped into the schedule. Canadia is opening for Mahoney Harris as she releases an EP with the assistance of Hannah Curwood and Tom Healy on Thursday 8th October. It’s at the Wine Cellar from 8pm, and will be a solo Ashley performance.

And of course the long-awaited Canadia feat. Maggie Williams on being a laptop happens on Saturday 10th at Dogs Bollix, playing on the Inverts‘ release tour. I’ll finally take Maggie on stage with me to bash out some Canadia laptop classics, and (fingers crossed) a couple of new jams from the EP.

Five songs mixed, now. Sleep, work, mix the next. Byes.

EP named, release party booked, pressure applied

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 by Ashley Noel Hinton
I’m bursting with ideas and fruit flavour right now, and I’m also kind of thirsty, which is a real pain because all the good drinks are in the house and I really can’t be bothered leaving the shed.
First things first: I’ve finally got around to booking a Canadia show. That’s right, a Canadia gig. No more jumping on the bill with whoever will have me. It’s time for a real Canadia party. The show is on Friday 23rd October at the Wine Cellar in Auckland, and will also star the fantastic Mr Slackjaw.
It’s also to be the release party for the new Canadia EP. The one I was going to finish in June, but instead will finish in September. The good news is it finally has a name: Beg, Steal and Burrow. There’s nothing like deadline to get me motivated, so this show is my deadline. Hold me to it, you guys.
Hannah JV and I had a bit of a meeting last night, and she’s going to be taking some photos for the cover art. The concept all came together really quickly once I had the name, and I’m pretty excited about it.
Like I said, I’m suddenly bubbling over with ideas, but this’ll do for now. One foot in front of the next, and so on.
